Mabel Bishop

August 12, 1921 — May 20, 2011

Mabel was born on August 12,1921 in Dubuc, Saskatchewan to Ronald and Mary (Nelson) Patterson. She passed away on May 20, 2011 at Hospice of Kitsap County. Mabel grew up in Winnepeg, Manitoba.   At the age of 4 she met Vi, her lifetime best friend. The family eventually moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, where she met Leslie Bishop.  Mabel and Les were married on January 17th, 1942.  They eventually moved to Bellingham, Washington where Les attended Western Washington State College.  They moved to Port Orchard following Les' graduation when he took a teaching position with the South Kitsap School District.   On November 11, 1954 during a ceremony on the deck of the USS Missouri, Mabel and Les became naturalized United States Citizens. Their Son Robert was born in 1955, followed by Leslie, Ronald, Patricia and Laurie.  Mabel was a den mother, little league supporter and made the best birthday cakes.  Many evenings the family could be found enjoying the pool at Parkwood Community Club where Mabel served as Treasurer and helped run the Sunday evening Bingo games.  Mabel was a Past Noble Grand of the Mystic Rebekah Lodge.  Once her youngest child started school, Mabel re-entered the workforce.  She worked at the Diver's Hut sewing wet suits.  The Diver's Hut eventually became Imperial Manufacturing and Mabel worked there for many years finally retiring in 1982.  Following her retirement Mabel enjoyed traveling, collecting many spoons along the way.  She also volunteered at Group Health Medical Center in Port Orchard.  She worked for many hours in her yard, planting roses, lilacs and other shrubs and flowers.  Mabel was pre-deceased by her parents and her husband.  She is survived by her sister Patricia Adam of Burnaby, British Columbia; her children; Robert, Les (Robin), Ron (Lisa), Patricia Allman (Fred) and Laurie Masterton (Dennis); grandchildren Peter and Les Bishop, Hollyanna Simmons (Clint); Ashley, Brian, and Kylee Bishop; and Michael Masterton (Kristie); Great Grandchildren; Karley, Zachary and Annabelle Simmons; Jeremy Bishop; and Jasmine and Morgan Masterton.   Inurnment to be at Sunset Lane Memorial Park. There will be a Celebration of Life on August 12 at Manchester State Park from noon to five.  The family wishes to thank the staff and caregivers at Orchard Pointe Memory Care for their compassionate and loving support of Mabel over the last few years.
