Michael Augustine Cavuoti - May 28, 1908 to Aug. 3, 2006 Port Orchard resident Michael Augustine Cavuoti, 98, died of natural causes Thursday at Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Dominic and Tomasina (Foriano) Cavuoti. He graduated from Boy's High School in Brooklyn and then attended Columbia University. June 6, 1933, he graduated from the Long Island College of Medicine. He interned at the New York Foundling Hospital. Commissioned in the Army Reserves, he served as a doctor with the CCC in the Adirondacks 1935-38 and was called to active duty in May 1941. He then served in the U.S. Army from May 1941 to April 1946 as a major in the USAR Medical Corps. While in the Army, he was assigned to the construction and development of the original hospital at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. A year leater, he was assigned to the 32nd Infantry "Red Arrow Division," where he joined them in Brisbane, Australia, and served as the battalion surgeon. He served with them during military campaigns in New Guinea and the Philippines. He received a Bronze Star, Combat Medical Badge, a Pacific Theater Ribbon, Philippines Liberation Ribbon and a Victory Medal. On Oct. 7, 1950, he married Helen Sordi in Oyster Bay, N.Y. Mustering out at the rank of Major in 1946, he re-opened his office on Landing Road in Glen Cove, NY where he served as a general practitioner for the next 42 years, retiring in 1988. In addition to his private practice, he worked as a medical examiner for the New York State Workman's Compensation Board for over 20 years. Following retirement, in 1992 he and Helen moved to Port Orchard, WA where his daughter, Thomasina, lives with her family. Here, in the spirit of service he had long exhibited, he and Helen volunteered as reading tutors at East Port Orchard Elementary School where they were declared "Outstanding Volunteers" in 1998. He enjoyed travel and continued neighborhood walks and gardening up to the time of his death. Cavuoti was also involved in the American Medical Association and the Sons of Italy. He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Cavuoti. He is survived by his wife, Helen of Port Orchard; daughter, Thomasina Sacrison (Chuck) of Port Orchard; brother, Clinton Cavuoti of Arlington, Texas; sister Edna (Cavuoti) Paradiso of Englewood, N.J.; and grandchildren, Katherine Sacrison of Portland, Ore., and Douglas Sacrison, a student at Western Washington University.
