Michael Anthony Matz was born in Sioux City, Iowa March 28, 1951. He was soon after adopted by Raymond Matz who was with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and his wife, Virginia Matz was a high school teacher at Umatilla High.
Michael graduated from Umatilla High School. He would later say that he hated going to the same school his mom taught at because it made him feel like he couldn’t get away with anything. That background was likely very integral to preparing him for the next phase of his life. Right out of high school Michael joined the U.S. Marines and after his stint at MCRD he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan.
After the Marines he followed the path of so many former Marines and went into law enforcement. He was quickly accepted with the PSNS Police Department. What many people don’t know is that his training qualified him as a Federal Law Enforcement Official. He proved himself to be a natural leader and rose through the ranks of Sergeant and then Lieutenant. Shortly after went into Anti Terrorism.
Michael was married and joined by Cindy Matz (died July 8, 2013). He was a loving husband and father. He valued family over everything. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed watching the fast action Jackson genre of movies and WWE with them.
Michael died on January 19, 2021 in Bremerton and is survived by his son Timothy and daughter-in-law Darlene Matz and their 5 children Jay, Jessica, Tim Jr, Jason and Taylor.
