Neil D. Uhlman, 65, of Stretch Island, Washington, formerly of Newcastle, Washington, died June 24, 1999. He was born February 3, 1934 in Seattle, Washington, to Walter and Ella Uhlman. Neil was raised in Seattle with his first job selling papers on the corner of 45th and Stoneway during the 1940's. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1952 and then the University of Washington in 1956 with a degree in Civil Engineering. During the 1950's and early 1960's, Neil worked at Boeing while also serving in the Navy Reserves from 1952 to 1960. He married his wife Marge in Seattle on Dec. 12, 1966. After teaching at Green River Community College for 10 years and working for the Higher Education Coordination Board in Olympia for 16 years, Neil finished off his working career back at the University of Washington as the Assistant to the Dean of Engineering for 5 years until his retirement in 1996. He was always able to find time to volunteer at many organizations including the Newport Hills fire dept., the crisis clinic in Seattle, and the Sheriff's Department in Belfair, Washington. In the last year of his life Neil was able to split time between his new passion for golf, their new home on Stretch Island, and traveling the world with his wife. Neil will be remembered for his love of Dixieland music, his police scanner, and his never ending help that he gave his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Marge, of Stretch Island, Washington; daughters Lynda Uhlman of Carnation, Washington and Lori Norman of Juneau, Alaska; and grandchildren, Linzie and Evan Norman of Juneau, Alaska. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held Wednesday, July 7, 1999 at 3:00PM at the University of Washington, Kane Hall, Walker Ames Room.
