Nicholas Schlafer, 69, Port Orchard WA
1947-2016
Nick was born April 13, 1947 in Merrick, NY to Katharine and Joseph Schlafer. Nick was the first of six children. Nicks younger years were filled with family and friends, his stories would captivate his younger syblings and he loved driving to Jones Beach on Long Island. After high school he was drafted into the U.S. army and spent two years serving his country. He moved to Phoenix, Arizona and worked for the Bell System. There he met his wife Margie Paetzold, they were married on June 24th 1978. Nick and Margie moved to Washington and had their three children there Nicholas, Marjorie, and Teresa. After 32 years at the phone company Nick retired and started to volunteer in his community at St. Vincent de Paul and at St. Gabriel Catholic Church. Those who knew Nick would remember his willingness to help others, joyous spirit, and humorous personality. He truly enjoyed spending time with his children and found his calling in life playing with his grandchildren; Alexis, Jake, Stella, and Colin. His love and generous spirit will be truly missed by those who love him.
Nick is survived by his son, Nicholas; daughters, Marjorie and Teresa; four grandchildren, Alexis, Jake, Stella, and Colin; and five siblings, Joseph Schlafer, Katharine Rossiello, Mary Johnson, Maurice Schlafer, and Christopher Schlafer. He was welcomed into heaven and Jesus’ presence by his wife Margie, and his parents Joseph and Katharine.
Visitation hours will be Tuesday, May 3rd from 2pm - 4pm and 8pm - 9pm at Rill Chapel, and Wednesday May 4th from 10am -11am in the chapel at St. Gabriel Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, May 4th at 11:00 am at St. Gabriel Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Haven of Rest Cemetery.
