Jesus of Nazareth 2 BC - 31 AD Jesus of Nazareth died on Mount Calvary in Jerusalem on Friday due to injuries suffered by crucifixion. He was born in Bethlehem in Judea to Mary and Joseph of Nazareth during the reign of King Herod. Having spent his early years in Egypt, Jesus grew up learning his father's carpentry trade in Nazareth. At age 12, his family and friends knew Jesus was a special young man when he marveled the religious leaders with his theological insights during the Feast of the Passover in the capital city. Jesus left Nazareth at the age of 30 to follow his dream of teaching and preaching the Word of God. He became well known throughout Galilee for his stories, metaphors and occasional miracles. Also an accomplished healer, Jesus was hailed by many as the "Great Physician." Jesus was everybody's friend, regardless of age, occupation, race, gender, or political persuasion. He enjoyed the festivals, quiet walks, boating, religious debates, and long conversations with his Heavenly Father. Survivors included his mother Mary; brothers James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon; his sisters; good friend Mary Magdalene; 11 disciples; and a host of faithful followers. He was preceded in death by his father Joseph, a carpenter in Nazareth; cousin John the Baptist, a fellow preacher; best friend Lazarus, whom he raised from the dead; and co-worker Judas Iscariot. Interment was at the stone grave of family friend Joseph of Arimathea. There will be no viewing by order of Pontius Pilate who had a boulder placed at the entrance of the tomb. Roman soldiers remain on guard. A memorial service will be held at 7:30 pm Friday at First Lutheran Community Church of Port Orchard, 2483 Mitchell Road, 876-3901. Rev. Allen Cudahy presiding. There will be a reception in his honor on Sunday morning as well, at 8, 9, 10, and 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers please try to live as Jesus did. Donations may be sent to anyone in need.
