G. Patricia “Pat” Rivers, granddaughter to one of Alaska’s most beloved pioneer families James and Anna Russell, passed away on June 5, 2009 at her son’s home in Port Orchard, WA after a battle with cancer. Born in Ketchikan, AK on March 7, 1924 she married the late Russell Guy Rivers in 1961 and lived in Fairbanks, AK before moving to Anchorage where she spent most of her life surrounded by family and friends. Pat was a devoted wife, mother, sister, and friend. She is survived by her son Victor Rivers, grandson Scott James Rivers and granddaughter Kelly Anne Rivers all of Port Orchard, WA. Also, daughter-in-law Patty Rivers of Port Orchard, brother Roy Moyer of Gig Harbor, WA, sister Margaret “Peggy” Mjelde of Anchorage, AK, and was preceded in death by sister Yukonna Wiley and her parents Leroy and Ethel Moyer. She is also survived by her nieces Anne Fessler of Gig Harbor, WA, and Colleen Wiley of Issaquah, WA, and nephews Mark Primo Anchorage, AK, Jim Moyer Walla Walla, WA, and Lee Moyer Salem, OR. Pat’s professional career included a tour in the Coast Guard and secretary for the Anchorage school district. After retirement she didn’t slow down but volunteered at the Alaska senior center along with the Anchorage visitor center. She also volunteered at Providence Hospital recovery room providing aid and comfort for patients. She loved traveling, bridge and visiting with family and friends. “Pat” always found ways to put the needs of others before herself. She was our “rock.” We will always love and miss our “Mom.” Private services will be held in Port Orchard, WA and Anchorage, AK.
