Paul Preston Walker, Sr., Major, United States Army (Ret.), 86, a resident of Port Orchard, died April 28, 2009 in Bremerton. He was born August 23, 1922 to Perry A, and Amanda E. (Samples) Walker in Clendenin, W VA. He graduated from Clendenin HS and earned his BS from the University of Texas at El Paso. He married Ethel A. Cole on November 24, 1945 in Paterson, NJ who preceded him death as did three brothers Orville, Leonard and Warren and one sister Glenna. He served for over 20 years in the US Army Artillery during WWII moving from the enlisted ranks to retire as a Major and was a Purple Heart recipient. 34 months of that time was in combat situations in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany participating in seven major campaigns from 1942 to 1945. He served fourteen months in Korea during the Korean Conflict from 1951 – 1952 as a forward Artillery Observer and Battery Commander. After retiring from the military, he went to work for Sears as an assistant credit manager for a short time. He then went on teach High School for 2 ½ years prior to taking several high level Civil Service jobs that he held until an injury forced his retirement with a total of 30 years and 11 days combined Federal Service. He was involved in Scouts for many years serving as a scout master, merit badge counselor, training officer and as a member of the Eagle Board. He was a soldier, high school teacher, genealogist, rock hound and other songs on the organ and guitar. He is survived by his loving wife of 9 years, Rose; two sons Paul Jr. and Stephen Anderson and 6 grandchildren. Graveside services were held on May 1, 2009 at Miller-Woodlawn in Bremerton.
