Celebrating the life of “Peggy” Margaret Louise Hansen
Peggy was so many things to so many people. A Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, Grand & Great-Grandmother, Friend & Child of God.
She was born on 9/22/1921, the second of 5 children to Lloyd and Ada Milner in Wenatchee, Washington. Her first home was living among the apple orchards in Palisades, Washington. Her father Lloyd was a well-known Orchardist of the time who was instrumental in the development of today’s Cold Storage Technology. Peggy was very close to her parents however at a young age was diagnosed with severe allergies which resulted in her spending her summers in Seattle with her Grandmother. She enjoyed these summers in the City, not only because it allowed her to be the “Only Child” of a doting Grandmother but it provided Peggy her first glimpse of the world of “Art” which became a lifelong passion.
The Milner family later moved from Palisades to Port Columbia near Brewster, Washington and Peggy attended Brewster schools, graduating Brewster High School. After graduation she went back to Seattle and attended a year of college at the University of Washington. It was at this time that she met Swen “Bob” Hansen at a church youth outing and from there her life changed course forever. She and Bob were married on November 12, 1943 and Peggy became a “War Bride” as Bob was shipped off in the Navy while she was pregnant with their first child. During WWII, while Bob was deployed, Peggy lived in Seattle with his parents raising her son. As the years progressed after the war they moved into a home they had built on Magnolia and continued to raise their growing family of 4 Boys and 1 Girl. Peggy was involved in so many activities during this time including crewing on the family sailboat, trips to Eastern Washington for camping and hunting outings, boating adventures on Hood Canal, snowmobiling and many road trip vacations with the family. She was a nurturer who loved children and opened her home to many foster children to share that love with. She also did lots of babysitting for local families and many grew up under her watchful eye.
In her “spare” time Peggy loved to paint. She was a talented artist in both oil and watercolor mediums and filled many canvases which grace the walls of her families homes. She had a love of the arts and surrounded herself with art books by the great masters. She also had a talent for decorating and sewing and created many of her own outfits.
Throughout her life Peggy was deeply rooted in her religious beliefs. She and her husband were very involved in the building of the Bellwood Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School and volunteered wherever there was a need. She believed strongly in the power of prayer and was always including family, friends and strangers in need, in those prayers.
After her children were raised she and Bob did some traveling including a “Trip to Europe” and the “Holy Land” which was a lifetime highlight for Peggy. Not only did she get to travel through the Holy Land visiting biblical sites she had read about all her life, but she also had the chance to see in person some of the great art works she had only seen before in her books.
Later in life Peggy and her husband moved to Port Orchard and were residents of Stafford Suites until her passing.
Peggy lived a rich and fulfilling life and was loved by the many who knew her. She left us peacefully on Feb. 26, 2016 and is now reunited with her husband Swen Robert Hansen, son Swen Robert Hansen Jr., and daughter Patricia Louise Henne. She is survived by three sons, Thomas Lloyd Hansen, John Frederick Hansen and William Milner Hansen. She is also survived by her brother William Lloyd Milner, numerous nieces and nephews, 12 Grandchildren and 15 Greatgrandchildren.
She was deeply loved and is truly missed.
