Cherished always—never forgotten mom passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family. She will be remembered for the way she dedicated her time, service and love to her family throughout her life, giving with a cheerful heart to all who were blessed to know her.
Pheobe was born to Raymond and Louise Hays in Colorado Springs, Colorado where she was raised with siblings, Leroy, Pauline, Shirley and Glenna.
At an early age her family relocated to Gorst, Washington. She attended both South Kitsap and Bremerton High School. Following graduation she pursued her love of the arts becoming an instructor of dance through Arthur Murray Dance Studio. She met and married the love of her life, Lloyd Byron Hibbard (Barney) who was also teaching at Arthur Murray Studio at the time. Together they were blessed with four daughters. Pheobe set her career aside to raise her family with her husband of forty-seven years, our precious dad.
Pheobe eventually returned to the University of Washington receiving her bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture and horticulture becoming a master gardener. She designed multiple school playgrounds throughout the Kitsap County area and beyond.
Her talents continued as she designed and nurtured a generous two-acre lilac garden that brought tours of enthusiasts earning her well-known nick name, ‘The Lilac Lady’.
Pheobe will be remembered for many things, including an accomplished guitar player, but among the top is how she served The Lord by loving others. She also loved competitive family game nights, and hit the culinary club with her famous signature dish, Mom’s Chicken and Homemade Noodles.
She is survived by her four daughters: Deairea, Julie, Susan, and Chandra as well as eleven grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.
Come share your memories with us as we gather for an informal reception at Rill’s Life Tribute Center, 1151 Mitchell Avenue in Port Orchard on Thursday June 8th at 12:00 pm. Mom would be serving her famous chicken and noodles, but we will be serving light hors d’oeuvers.
We look forward to your presence.
