Phyl was born September 27, 1927 in Shelton, Washington. The daughter of Helen and Charles Oppelt, she was the eldest of six children. She attended schools at White Star and Elma in Grays Harbor County. After graduation in 1945, she worked at the State Department of Labor and Industries in Olympia.
In 1946, Phyl met and married her husband, Robert W. “Bob” Meyer. They celebrated their 67th anniversary this September.
Phyl, along with Bob, was an active member of American Ex-Prisoners of War (AXPOW), a Congressionally-chartered service organization that advocates for former prisoners of war and their families. In 1982, Phyl was elected Commander of the Washington State Department of AXPOW, the first (and so far, only) woman to hold that office.
Phyl accompanied Bob to Europe several times, retracing his steps as a soldier and POW in World War II. They attended the 40th, 50th and 60th anniversaries of the Liberation of Luxembourg and the Battle of the Bulge.
In 1999, Phyl wrote and published “The Shadow of Death”, a book detailing Bob’s experiences as a POW.
In addition to AXPOW, Phyl joined Bob in activities with Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, Friends of Willie and Joe, and the West Sound Military Vehicles Preservation Club. In the 1950s and ‘60s, she volunteered with the American Red Cross. Her Gray Lady uniform is on display at the Veterans Memorial Museum in Chehalis.
Phyl is survived by her husband, Bob, sons Robert W. Meyer, Jr. (Nancy) and David C. Meyer (Cyn), daughter Emily H. Meyer, grandson Robert W. Meyer III and granddaughter Amy X. Meyer.
Phyl’s remains will be interred at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent. As she requested, there will be no memorial service.
