Richard “Dick” Grant, 73, passed away on 6/26/15 at his home in Port Orchard, WA after a battle with cancer. Dick was born at home on Sept 29, 1941 in Stanley, North Dakota. When he was in junior high school, he moved from North Dakota to Albuquerque, NM with his parents Emmy and Joe Grant. As a youth, Dick was active in the Boy Scouts, lettered in football, and had his first paid job in a radio repair shop at age 13. Dick enlisted in the Navy Aug 26, 1959 at age 17. He served aboard the USS Enterprise during its circumnavigation of the world during Operation Sea Orbit as part of Nuclear Task Force One. While in the Navy, he trained as an electrician and nuclear engineer. Honorably discharged from the Navy Sept 1968 as Electricians Mate First Class, he moved the family to Washington State where he worked at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. In 1974, he was recruited by Westinghouse to work in South Korea as a nuclear engineer; he started in Korea as a start-up engineer for the country’s first nuclear power plant and worked his way up to Director of Marketing for Asia. After working in Korea for 12 years, Dick and Maxine returned to the U.S. and settled back in Port Orchard, WA where Dick returned to work at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. In 1994, Dick and Maxine became parents to their youngest granddaughters, Emily and Amanda. After Maxine’s passing in 2003, Dick continued to raise the girls on his own. He served as chauffeur, counselor, housekeeper and confidant, and was an avid supporter of all their activities. He was popular among their friends and teammates and was known by many as Papa.
Dick is survived by his children, Rick Grant and partner Ginny Springer of Bremerton, WA; Anita Grant of Port Orchard, WA; and Shannon Grant and spouse Darlene Warning of Yorkana, PA; granddaughters Aubrey Rainey, Emily Grant, Amanda Grant and Nicole Grant and great-grandson Silas. Dick was preceded in death by his beloved wife Maxine; adopted son Yoo-Sung Choi; his parents Joe and Emmy; and his brothers Donald, Milton, and Fred. Dick was patriarch of Clan Grant and is survived by nieces Diana, Priscilla, Marie, Julie, and Janell and by nephews Joey and Jim, and their families.
Dick was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Tacoma, WA. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to L’arche Tahoma Hope in care of St. Leo’s
