Dr. Robert Boehme, retired physician, went to be with his Savior on March 9, 2014, just five days after his 94th birthday. He was born on March 4, 1920 to Herman and Lucille Boehme in Akron, Ohio--the oldest of six children.
Robert was a graduate of Copley High School, the University of Akron. and Western Reserve Medical School, all of Ohio. Prior to entering medical school, he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during WWII at Crile Army Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.
He began his practice in Port Orchard in 1949 and spent the last 24 years of his 42 years in practice as a federal medical officer. On retiring in 1998, he was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Medal for Distinguished Service by the Secretary of the Navy. He also served during his early practice years as the medical director of a Portland, Oregon laboratory that pioneered the development of automated medical laboratory testing.
In 1951, Robert married Dorothy Johanson and two sons were born of that marriage. Following her death in 1962, he later married Mary Neal who adopted his two sons.
He was active in community school activities, and he and his wife Mary, in 1966, contributed to the design and construction of a new Marcus Whitman Junior High School football field complete with a track and grandstand.
In 1981 Robert and his wife, Mary, served as members of a World Vision medical team that provided medical services to Cambodian refugees in Thailand.
He was a former member of the South Kitsap School Board and the first medical director of Kitsap Physicians Service. He was a pianist from the big band days and served as an organist for a number of churches locally and in Oregon.
He is survived by his wife Mary of fifty years, sons Greg (Marta) of Mukilteo and Ron (Shirley) of Port Orchard and six grandchildren (Nathan, David, Bethany, Megan, Ryan and Jason), and a brother, Jack, of Denton, Texas. His parents proceeded him in death as did a sister, Marjorie Hay, and three brothers, Richard, David and Donald. Richard was an Air Force B-24 bomber pilot who lost his life in WWII. Brothers David and Donald were US army veterans.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 29 at 1pm at Christ the Rock Community Church, 4100 SW Old Clifton Road in Port Orchard.
