Robert Gary Hanley was born June 3, 1948 in Kellogg, Idaho to Daniel P. and Emma L. (Rowe) Hanley, Sr. The family later moved to Butte, Montana, but eventually landed in the Puget Sound area where Robert graduated from Evergreen HS in Burien, just south of Seattle, WA.
He later took a Job as a crane operator at SWPAC as a special weapons handler on Bangor Submarine Base. You needed to be very good at what you did to work in that particular area of the Navy’s NW Region.
Robert had a very eclectic set of hobbies and pass-time activities. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping. One of his favorite spots to go camping with family was at a place called La Wis Wis over on the southside of Mt. Rainier. He also enjoyed gardening, woodworking, smoking salmon, and paining with his favorite medium being acrylic paints. He loved playing with his dogs Durango and Murphy, and playing Pokemon on the Port Orchard waterfront; and either barbecuing for friends and family or going out to eat with them. If that wasn’t eclectic enough, he was also a Black Belt Tai Kwon Do martial artist and Sensai at the Dojo he was part of.
His favorite thing of all outside of family was helping everyone he ever met. He was especially fond of helping veterans apply for benefits if he found out they had not done so. He was very focused on making sure they at least got their paperwork filled out and turned in.
Robert passed away on November 26th and is predeceased by his parents and an infant sister, Danette Hanley.
He is survived by his loving wife Jana; daughters Lisa and Juli; Sisters Barbara (Ron) Hash, Nancie Stanley, and Sandie Engle; brothers Danile (Sue) Hanley, Jr., Jack Hanley, and Richard (Janelle) Hanley; and numerous extended family members and friends. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
