Dr. Robert Osborn passed away on May 26, 2023, leaving a life full of love, good times and service to others. He was easy-going, had many friends, enjoyed conversation and had a good sense of humor. A loving father, he always had time for his children. He enjoyed good health and was a hard worker who almost never missed a day of medical practice.
Robert, who called himself Robb, was born on November 17th, 1941 in Dexter, Iowa to Clarence Robert and Dora Ruth (Peck) Osborn. He is survived by his wife Jean (Welch) Osborn, children Ruth Vangel, Marcus Osborn, Meredith Jones and Matthew Osborn. Grandchildren include Jessica and Miranda Vangel, Abigail and Cassidy Jones and Logan and Olivia Osborn. Robb’s only sibling, Mary Osborn Blomquist, who was five years older than he was, passed away the same morning as Robb in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Robb spent his childhood years in Dexter, Iowa. He met his wife, Jean, during Freshman Orientation Days at the University of Iowa. He achieved a B.S and M.D. at the University, and he and Jean married in 1965. They continued to live in Iowa City until Robb completed four years of residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
During the years of 1971-72 Robb served an obligatory two years of service in the Navy based at Portsmouth Navel Hospital and living in Chesapeake, VA. Visiting new places, making new friends and enjoying great near-by beaches made the two years pass quickly. However, the beautiful Northwest called, and in 1973 the family moved to Bellevue, WA where Robb practiced OB-GYN at Group Health, mostly in Redmond, until his retirement in 2002. He estimated he delivered approximately 6,000 babies in that time.
Outside of medical practice, Robb enjoyed his children’s activities, singing in the church choir, participating in professional and service organizations and going to timeshares Snowater at Mt. Baker and Velas Vallarta in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. After retirement, in 2002, Robb and Jean moved to Port Orchard, WA. This move afforded him time to help babysit his granddaughters and be part of their childhood activities. He was an enthusiastic boat owner, and trips to the San Juan islands are fond memories for the whole family. One year Robb helped a friend to take his boat from Fort Lauderdale to San Diego, traversing the Panama Canal. Robb and Jean loved to travel, especially on cruises, and they estimated that they had visited at least 65 countries.
A Celebration of Life will be held June 25th at 2:00 PM at the Port Orchard United Methodist Church, 725 Kitsap St., in Port Orchard, with a reception immediately following at the Clubhouse at McCormick Woods, 5155 McCormick Woods Dr., Port Orchard. Memorial donations may be made in Robb’s name to Port Orchard United Methodist Church or the South Kitsap Helpline.
