Bob Thune, age 84, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2019, in Port Orchard, Washington. Bob was born in New York City on November 24, 1934, the son of Kai Thune and Josephine D’Orsi Thune. The family later moved to southern California, where Bob graduated from San Fernando High School in 1954. He loved sports and excelled at cross country. He was part of a 1953 season championship team. After high school he enlisted in the Air Force, subsequently becoming an officer and rising to the rank of major. He flew as a navigator and later served as an intelligence officer in Viet Nam. He earned a Bachelor’s degree along the way.
Following his retirement from the Air Force in 1975, Bob pursued an interest in horticulture and embarked on a second career in that field. He worked for the State of California and was at one time part of the ream landscaping and maintaining the beautiful grounds around the State Capitol building in Sacramento. His second retirement brought him to Port Orchard, where he enjoyed his long-term hobby of stamp collecting and continued to practice horticulture by creating a lovely setting for their home in McCormick Woods.
He is survived by his beloved wife Jeanne Thune; a son from a prior marriage, Robert Olson; two stepsons, Brian and Erich Izdepski and their respective wives Kathy and Karen; daughter-in-law Susan Izdepski, widow of late stepson Robert Izdepski; and numerous grandchildren.
