Rolland Canavan

Rolland H. Canavan , fondly known aas Rollie, passed away at his step-daughters residence in Manchester, WA on July 4th 2003. Rollie was born on May 3, 1915 on Orcas Island, in Deer Harbor, Washington to Earl and Meta Canavan, and lived in the Puget Sound area all his life. He graduated with the class of '33 from Franklin High School in Seattle. While attending the University of Washington he studied engineering. The opportunity to become a fireman was realized while he was a student in 1935. He was married to Margaret Sparks for 41 years, until her death in 1979. He retired as a Captain from the Seattle, Fire Department after 30 years of service. His part-time retirement included 10 years as Fire Chief at Fort Lawton, interspersed with travel. He was preceded in death by his brother, Leonard Canavan. Rollie married Muriel Scott in 1983 and they resided in Bremerton, Washington, close to the Kitsap Colf and Country Club. He loved to fish, especially from his home on the Bainbridge Island Point Monroe sandspit, and to golf at the Wing Point and Kitsap Golf and Country Clubs, and continued golfing well into his 80's. While in Seattle, Rollie was the Chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation for the State of Washington for many years. He is survived by his wife Muriel of Bremerton, Washington, and by his daughters Colleen (Bill) Meacham, Kathryn Canavan, and Peggy (Jack) Molsness and brother Desmond Canavan; four step-children Dale Scott, Dee Scott, Debora Reda and Leslie Reidy; 23 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. At request of the deceased, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donatons may be made to the Junior Golf Program at Kitsap Golf and Country Club in his name, to the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation of charity of your choice.
