Born in 1918 to Frederick and Lydia Lindner in Katanning, Western Australia. During WWII Ruth met her future husband, Robert Barkhurst, in Fremantle, Western Australia. After the war she moved to the United States and they were married in his home town of Silverton, Oregon. Their lives in the Navy kept them moving. Their first daughter was born on Whidbey Island, Washington; the next two children were born in California and the next two were born in Bremerton. With their growing family they chose Port Orchard to settle, built the family home, nurtured the land, raised the family and lived modest lives. Their passions for gardening grew strong over the years. Ruth spent many years caring for and adding to the landscape they so loved. She enjoyed this and a lifetime hobby of knitting. Anyone who knew her will remember her strong-willed and independent way of life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Barkhurst Sr, their youngest son Harold, and her daughter Pamela in Australia. Surviving are her children Suzanne (Bernard) Holland and Bob Barkhurst in Bremerton, Sandy (Rick) Verhelst, Terry (Cathy) Barkhurst and their two children Allison and Albert in Port Orchard. In addition she leaves numerous family members in Australia. A private family ceremony will take place at Sunset Lane Cemetery in Port Orchard.
