Ryan David Despain

December 13, 1974 — February 21, 2015

Ryan David Despain passed away on February 21, 2015 in his home in Port Orchard, Washington from a severe stroke. He was 40 years old. Ryan was born on December 13, 1974 in Provo, Utah to Dennis Gardner Despain (deceased) and Sheila Morrison Despain.

When Ryan was a child, he was fascinated with trains, real or toy. He became obsessed with his set of model trains and spent many hours creating tracks and stations under his raised bed his dad made for him.

After his trains, he began channeling his creativity through drawing and oil painting. He took a class when he was young which launched his love of art. Ryan produced many beautiful landscapes, which reflected his affinity for nature and the outdoors.

The mountains are where Ryan felt most at home. In High School he took a skiing class and has always loved playing in the snow during the winter. He loved to hike, camp and fish at any opportunity. The skills he acquired as an Eagle Scout and instilled in him by his father often came in handy in these endeavors. Later in life, he used these skills as a Boy Scout leader.

His favorite artistic outlet was creating extravagant Christmas light displays set to music. He even proposed to his wife, Emily, in lights.

When Ryan was 19, he served an honorable mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the California, Riverside mission.

He married Marie Wylie on July 18, 1998. They had two beautiful children. Aspen Mae was born July 11, 1999 followed by Zachary Dennis on April 28, 2002. His favorite job ever was being a dad. Ryan and Marie divorced in 2004.

Ryan loved to celebrate life. He would celebrate with fireworks, bountiful Easter egg hunts, and his Christmas lights. And through his kind and generous heart, he made sure it was a special time for everyone.

Some of his best ways to spend leisure time was to play board games, watch movies, and glean information from educational television shows. He loved board games so much that he had a basement full of them.

He was a jack-of-all-trades, a Renaissance man. Ryan was skilled in carpentry, electrical work, heating and air conditioning, and general handy work. He could generally figure out how to fix most anything. But the job where he excelled the most was when he worked in the Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake, WA as a CNA and then a surgical assistant.

Ryan found the love of his life in October, 2011 at a dance in the Seattle area. Ryan and Emily got married on April 2, 2014 in Port Orchard, Washington. Through this marriage he gained a second son, Simon Hoisington. The last 10 months were among his happiest.

He is preceded in death by his father, Dennis Gardner Despain, and his paternal and maternal grandparents. He is survived by his wife, Emily Jefferies Despain, his children, Aspen and Zachary Despain, his stepson, Simon Hoisington, his mother, Sheila Morrison Despain, his sisters, Noelle Golding (Russ), Angela Pedersen (Tim), Tara Montoya (Orlando), Melissa Kelly (Shawn), and Shannon Despain, and his brother Daniel Despain.
