SPC Samuel (Sam) Donald Stone, 20, of Port Orchard, WA died on May 31, 2009 in Tallil, Iraq from injuries sustained in a rollover accident while on a convoy mission. Born June 10, 1988 at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Bremerton, WA to Steve and Nancy (Gorham) Stone. Sam grew up in the South Kitsap area and graduated from Wellpinit H.S/Ft. Simcoe Job Corp in White Swan, WA in 2006. After graduation, Sam joined the carpenters apprenticeship in Seattle, WA. In April 2007 Sam joined The Washington State Army National Guard, completing basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC and went on to Ft. Eustis, Va for a CH-47 Helicopter Repairer course where he earned top honors as the Distinguished Graduate. Sam went on to serve with Company E, 1-168th Aviation,at Ft. Lewis, WA., excelling as a parts removal specialist and a member of the Downed Aircraft Recovery Team. In the Spring of 2008 Sam volunteered to deploy with the 81st BCT and by summer he was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom where he served with the C Troop, 1-303rd Calvary. Sam was preceded in death by his grandfathers Donald A. Stone, Bill Gorham and his Aunt Barbara A. (Stone) Newman. Survivors include his companion “Most Beautiful” Toni Shimek of San Bernardino, CA; parents Steve and Nancy (Gorham) Stone of Port Orchard, WA; sister Sarah (Svend) Sorensen of Seattle, WA; brothers Jay (MLeah) Stone of Gig Harbor, WA and Todd (Kimberly) Conrad of Port Orchard,WA. Grandmothers Evelynn (Robert) Stone-Hovey of Port Orchard, WA and Mary Gorham of La Jolla, CA; uncle Mike Newman of Port Orchard, WA; aunts Linda Chapler of Seattle, WA, Susan (Tim) Excell of Auburn, CA and Peg (Tom) Moore of La Jolla, CA,; cousins Corina Newman and son Justin, Jennifer DeBusk, Jeff Excell and Kris and Nick Moore. Nieces and nephews Devin, Tearalilly, Angelina Stone and Troy, Ethan,and Ariana Conrad. Along with Sam’s beloved black lab “Ayla.”. Sam’s passion was reading. He enjoyed computers and gaming with his friends. He loved living in Western Washington where he spent most of his time fishing, hunting and exploring in the mountains. He was an avid storyteller and always had an audience whether it was at a campout in front of the fire or in the kitchen eating pizza, cooking hot tacos and enjoying Otter pops. He had an extremely humble and loyal soul. He never met a stranger, only friends. Being there for others in need before they were aware they needed him. His wonderful grin, contagious laughter and pure genuine kindness were felt by so many and will live on in our hearts forever, No words or actions will ever describe the hole left in our hearts from Sam’s passing Interment services will be held on October 17, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Sunset Lane Cemetery in Port Orchard, WA with a Celebration of Life to follow at the Stone family home.
