Selma Gunhild Digerness, 95, of Port Orchard passed away Friday, August 30, 2013. Born May 13, 1918, in Ray, North Dakota, she was the daughter of Halvor T. and Clara Elaine (Hovdenes) Digerness.
During World War II, she worked as a welder at the Eagle Harbor Shipyard on Bainbridge Island. In 1948 after returning to North Dakota, Selma relocated to Port Orchard where she was a founding member of the Lutheran Community Church of Port Orchard. Following a long career at Myhre’s Restaurant in Port Orchard, she was a lead cook with Family Kitchen, a non profit organization based at First Lutheran Church which provides free meals to those who need it. She also kept busy with the Lutheran World Relief, an organization that sends needed items to Third World countries. Each fall found her making lefse for the bake sale at First Lutheran.
Surviving relatives include numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Agnes Palmerson and Johanna Talley, brothers Toralph Digerness, Clarence Digerness, Harris Digerness and Gordon Digerness.
Memorial services will be conducted at the First Lutheran Community Church of Port Orchard on Wednesday September 11th at 11:00 a.m.
