Stanley “Stan” Lawrence Miller, age 99, of Port Orchard, Washington, peacefully passed away
on July 20, 2024 in Copperas Cove, Texas. He was born the youngest of four sons on
December 5, 1924 in Arco, Idaho to Clarence Franklin Miller and Hilda Calene Marks Miller. He
spent his childhood in Moore, Idaho. Being raised on a family farm he developed a love of
horses. He worked as a ranch hand on two separate cattle ranches and spent ten years working
on a dairy farm. Later, Stan transitioned to a career at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in
general trades as a mechanic, a rigger helper, and a shop foreman where he retired after 30
years of service.
Stan married his high school sweetheart Alice Ruth Bate in 1943 and had four daughters; Debra
Sue (d.1944), Claudine and husband William “Bill” Craig of Port Orchard, Washington, Cheryl
Fish of Kempner, Texas, and Judith Ann (d.1955).
In his younger years, Stan was a master at breaking and training horses. He was proud of
winning a ribbon at a local state show horse competition. He loved all things western,
gardening, and later in life found a passion for playing pool in a league as well as with family
and friends. Stan was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
in Port Orchard where he held many callings including Bishop of the 2nd Ward and Stake
Patriarch.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Alice (d.1985), second wife Verna Reed Miller
(d.2002), and three older brothers, Leonard, Gerald, and Walter.
He is survived by four grandchildren; Charles Gregory Fish of Kempner, Texas, Chantelle and
husband Anthony Abruzzo of Austin, Texas, Chawna and husband Russell Oliphant of Azle,
Texas, Stanley Craig and husband Anthony Chieffo of Marietta, Georgia; seven
great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren; and many other extended family members.
