Steven J. Ryan died suddenly May 7, 2021 at home. Steve was born on September 21, 1959 in Bremerton to Betty Jean and Jim Ryan. Steve grew up in Olalla and attended Olalla Elementary, Cedar Heights Jr. High and South Kitsap High School, and was a proud graduate of the Class of 1978.
Steve was raised in the construction industry. As a youngster, Steve’s Grandpa Chuck, Dad and Uncle Charlie taught him how to operate machinery and Steve quickly mastered every type of construction machinery available to him. It was only fitting that he began his career with his Dad, James E. Ryan Construction, then his Uncle Charlie, Ryan Built Homes.
In the 1980’s, Steve started his own business, Steve Ryan Construction. Steve expanded his business to include ownership of trucks, equipment, and a gravel pit. He developed property, hauled materials and drop boxes, excavated property, and especially enjoyed cutting and delivering firewood.
Steve dreamed big and was not afraid to take risks or ask for support with his many business ventures. He enjoyed many life-long friendships and partnerships in his too-short lifetime. He is greatly missed.
Steve was gregarious, soft-hearted, and generous. Steve would be the first person to introduce himself, welcome people to the area and offer help to those in need.
Always with Steve were his beloved canine companions, Jack-Jack and Sister.
Steve especially loved his family and extended family. He is survived by his sister Susie Ryan Nix (Von), niece Amanda Heinemann (Brandon) great-niece Zoe, niece Alissa Nix, great-nephew Leland, sister Heidi Natter Villarma (Jeff), nephew Mason Villarma, niece Eliza Villarma, brother Mike Ryan (Coleen), nephew Nic Ryan, niece Madi Ryan (Chris), aunt Mary Ann Hensrud Johnson (George), Kay Nix. The family would like to thank those of you who reached out during this difficult time. Your love of Steve, shown by your support and offers of help is so appreciated.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, Jim Ryan, and mother, Betty Jean Hensrud Natter, and brother, Matt Ryan, his grandparents, and his beloved dog, Jack-Jack.
Steve’s celebration of life will happen at later date. Please visit Rill.com to share a memory. He was laid to rest at Sunset Lane Cemetery in Port Orchard.
In Steve’s honor, reach out to a friend or help someone in need. Additionally, donations to South Kitsap Helpline or Kitsap Humane Society made in his name will be greatly appreciated.
