Sunday Nohealohalani Dargel

June 23, 1957 — May 22, 2013

Sunday Nohealohalani (Torres) Dargel of Port Orchard died May 22, 2013 after a valiant battle with cancer.

Originally from Koloa, Kauai, HI, Sunday was born on June 23, 1957. She grew up on the island, and after graduating from high school, joined the U.S. Air Force. This was the “first” of many new experiences for her; wearing covered shoes 24/7, speaking better English instead of the island Pidgin, and seeing more of the United States while stationed at Lackland Air Force Base, TX, supply school in Denver, CO, and then duty stations in Sacramento and Merced, CA and finally McChord Air Force Base in WA.

While stationed in Merced, CA, she married her high school sweetheart Tom. Because they were both serving in different branches of the service, it became difficult for the two of them to be stationed together and she decided to end her military career. Sunday supported her sweetheart throughout his Navy career, college, and school district career. Being a mother and raising three children was her greatest profession, but she also accomplished becoming a dental technician, certified pharmacy technician, and earning her bachelor’s degree from Western Washington University in Early Education to become a certificated school teacher. She also served in various positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Her community service was with the American Cancer Society’s Reach to Recovery program, Relay for Life, Make a Wish Foundation, and READY! for Kindergarten.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas K. Dargel; and children: Zachary Dargel, Kristina a.k.a Tina (Bret) Hansen and grand daughter Kristiana Hansen all of Port Orchard, and Nicholas (Sheri) Dargel and grand daughters Malia and Ava Dargel all of Utah; her siblings are brother: Angelo Batin of Koloa, and five sisters: Barbara (Butch) Diehl of South Carolina, Yolanda (David) Cutcher of Anahola, and Christine (Jaime) Orozco of Ewa Beach; mother-in-law Kimi (Watanabe) Nakamura, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. Her parents; father Cresenciano Torres and mother Madeline Lena (Kailiponi) Torres and sisters Luana (Elliott) Rosa and Elizabeth precede her in death.

A Memorial service is planned for Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 1100 at the LDS Chapel, 1550 Hoover Ave SE, Port Orchard, WA 98366. Inurnment of her ashes will take place at a later date at the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Hanapepe, Kauai, HI near her parents.
