Sunday Emeka

December 30, 1943 — October 22, 2001

Sunday Arlene Emeka, was born to Warren and Pearl Bacon on December 30, 1943 in Oregon City,Oregon. She was their second of two daughters.Mrs.Emeka was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and educator. She was united in marriage to Mauris L. Emeka in July 1966,and they raised four sons;Amon,Gabriel, Justin, and Apollo). She had a demanding career as a computer programmer and as a bicycle store owner-operator, and finally, as an educator. It was her devotion to family, and especially, the raising of their four sons, that truly distinguishes her life. A selfless and humble person, she always tried to put herself in the position of others as she sought to infuse clear and unbiased understanding into all that she did. By her daily example, she taught her sons to be reliable, imaginative, responsible and resourceful. She showed them, not by her words, but by the way she lived just how to be considerate of others and how to be a good steward. As a wife and friend, Mrs. Emeka was a good and sensitive listener, always slow to anger, and quick to offer insight, compassion, and imaginative thought to nearly any situation.Mrs. Emeka was patient in all things. She was an avid reader, teacher, and grandmother extraordinaire. Long before it was fashionable to do so, she would sit and read for hours to her sons as they grew up, and later to her four grandchildren. She had a quiet and unassuming manner that elicited respect from all those that she met. During her adult life she functioned successfully in numerous situations, as she and her family lived in Corvallis, Oregon; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Kansas City, Missouri; New York City, New York; Englewood, New Jersey; Seattle, Washington; Bainbridge Island, Washington; Wichita, Kansas; and finally settling in Port Orchard, Washington. Wherever she lived, it was her demonstrated sense of fairness, thoughtfulness and compassion that was the hallmark of her behavior.Sunday Arlene Emeka, the wife, mother, and grandmother will be eternally missed. Her physical presence is gone, but the essence of her(that is, her spirit) remains with all of us. Above all, Sunday knew that we are created in God's likeness and image, and that there is only Life, God's Life, through which we live and have our eternal being.
