Susan "Soozie" E. Hummel

April 21, 1950 — March 9, 2018

Susan E “Soozie” Hummel passed away on March 9th, 2018. She was born on April 21st, 1950 in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. She was born to Nevin A. Hummel and Barbara R. McNinch Hummel. She graduated from Bloomsburg High School, class of 1968.

Soozie graduated from Mansfield State College in Mansfield, PA with an undergraduate’s degree and then received her master’s degree from Bloomsburg University.

Soozie is survived by her sisters Kay Hummel Hughes and Kathy A. Hummel and her children Tyson P. DePoe (Kristen), Isaac J. DePoe and Tricia M Purcell (Ashley) and her four grandchildren, Paxton and Rebecca DePoe and Grey and Everett Purcell.

Soozie spent many years teaching high school English and Drama in Pennsylvania. She also waitressed and managed at Denny’s and Perkins restaurants. Soozie returned to teaching English online at Keystone National High School. Most recently she taught online with Insight School of Washington.

Soozie moved to Port Orchard, WA in 2008. She quickly found her second home with the theatre community at the Western Washington Center for the Arts. It was here that she reconnected with her love of theatre. She was a stage manager, assistant director and actor for many performances throughout the years. She was overjoyed to pass this love of theatre to her two oldest grandchildren. She truly loved all of her thespian friends and they were such a special part of her life. Soozie will be deeply missed by her family and all of those that called her friend.

A celebration of life will be held at the Western Washington Center for the Arts on Sunday, March 25th from 1-3pm.
