Theresa Lakey

Theresa Marie (Haydu) Lakey, 89 passed away from this life on May 30, 2008 in the comfort of her home in Bismarck, North Dakota. Theresa was born on March 29, 1919 in Gladstone, North Dakota to Andrew and Marie (Karabensch) Haydu. She was baptized on April 21, 1919 at St. Thomas' Church in Gladstone. She was raised on the family farm 8 miles SW of Gladstone. She attended school and graduated from the 8th grade at Shipley School in Stark County in 1933. Theresa left North Dakota for Washington State in 1936 at the age of 17. She met Henry Lakey in Selah, Washington, and they were married at the Yakima County Courthouse on September 9, 1939. In 1989, they were remarried on their 50th Anniversary with the 1st Christian Church in Port Orchard, Washington. Henry passed away in 2003. Theresa moved to Bismarck in May 2005, where she lived very near to her great-niece and caregiver, Roxanne Zenker. Theresa has always enjoyed writing and receiving letters. On her 88th Birthday, she was given a Surprise Card Shower and received over 65 cards and letters. That was one of the most beautiful days of her life! She often wrote journals on her travels with her husband during their snowbird years. She loved doing creative embroidery, cross stitch, and baby quilts. She always carried stationary and a book to read with her and never had a moment of boredom. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and was very witty. She always had a warm smile and enjoyed each and every moment of her last years with her ND family! A prayer service was held for her in the presence of her many nieces, nephews and hospice. She is survived by her 3 sons, Keith Lakey, Seattle, Washington; Ray (Carolyn) Lakey, Coos Bay, Oregon; Bob Lakey, Yelm, Washington; and 1 daughter, Linda Greenwood, Seattle, Washington; 7 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 5 sisters, Anna, Elizabeth, Sophie, Katherine & Pauline, 1 brother, Andrew, and her son Avery. Graveside service at 4:00 pm on June 9, 2008 at Sunset Lane Memorial Park in Port Orchard. Memorials in her memory may be made to Bismarck Med Center One Hospice.
