Thomas Wesley Sanders

January 26, 1923 — September 13, 2016

Tom was a Radar Technician First Class aboard USS SeaRaven SS-196 during World War II and Project Manager WW2END Special Event aboard the USS Missouri. He was an accomplished amateur radio operator (W6QJI) who expertly designed antennas, and he was regional coordinator for the SETI Institute (Search for Extra-terrestrial Intelligence).

Tom’s strength inspired others to pursue their highest ambitions. He could have asserted his rare intellect to demonstrate superiority; instead, he helped countless people discover their own unique gifts.

He was an aerospace engineering consultant who, with his team, identified and corrected design errors resulting in flight malfunctions. He was usually hired shortly before critical corporate and military deadlines. Tom, and others like him, were called gunslingers: decisive and aggressive risk takers. Engineering gunslingers are extraordinarily creative problem solvers.

Tom spent his earnings to form a company, which was later embezzled by an employee. He set aside anger, refused to declare bankruptcy, represented himself in court, and worked for years to repay the debts.

He and I, his wife Jana, met months after he discovered the embezzlement. Because he had the courage to trust again, we were blessed with a beautiful 48 year marriage.
