Veva L. Janes

April 1, 1925 — July 24, 2016

Veva was born April 1, 1925 in Port, Oklahoma. She was the 8th child of Bunny and Dessie Hopkins. She was raised in a farming community and attended school in the small town of Port.
In 1943 Veva married Virgle Janes and they set up their first home in Sentinel, Oklahoma. Their first child LaDesa was born there in August 1945.

They traveled for work for several years, many times following the drilling rig companies where Virgle worked. They traveled with family to Portland, Oregon, and then moved to Kitsap County for work in 1949.

LaDesa started first grade and in December 1949 their second child Rhonda was born.
The family continued to grow as Virgle Auston, Jr. arrived in August of 1954. Then in January 1960 the arrival of Farley Mack completed our family. The happy family moved to Manchester in June of 1962.

Veva spent her time keeping up with her girls and all their social engagements. The boys were busy with Boy Scouts, baseball, marching bands and school programs.
She effortlessly kept her garden and all her flowers in tip-top shape. She loved her knitting machine and made beautiful garments. She enjoyed working every year at the Kitsap County Fair and, yes, she won many Blue Ribbons. Veva was a wonderful seamstress and sewed many of her family’s clothes.

Veva enjoyed her family and entertaining in her home. Her back yard parties were always a success.

Veva and Virgle enjoyed tent camping and trips to Oklahoma to visit family. It was always two weeks in August combined with family reunions – Holy smoke, talk about large numbers of people! Veva had 9 brothers and sisters and Virgle had 8 brothers and sisters and they all had large families. It was always a fast moving vacation. Ronda stated: “I think I speak for all the kids: It was great to come home to Washington!”.

Veva was raised in the church of Christ and was a faithful Christian all of her life. After losing Virgle in 2003, which was six weeks before their 60th wedding anniversary, Veva was left to fill up her life with family. In the following years, Veva developed dementia. She lived in her home and was watched over by family and friends. Everyone kept a watchful eye on her until she needed additional care. She went to live in an assisted living home in Gig Harbor.

After a second fall and hip surgery, Veva’s heart was found to be failing and she quietly drifted to her final reward.

Veva and Virgle were truly blessed. They had nine grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Veva’s family and friends will miss her smiling face and loving kindness.

Private graveside services will be at Sunset Lane Cemetery.
