Virgil James Reames was born October 1, 1938, resided in Kitsap County his entire life, and was especially fond of spending summers at his family’s property on Hood Canal. Virgil was the son of Frances J. (Trauber) Reames and Charles Frederick Reames, and brother to Jerald Jimeson Reames and Victor Charles Reames.
He retired early in 1984 after working at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 14 years, and was a long term volunteer for the Sydney Museum and Arts Association (SMAA) - helping to create and maintain exhibits, archives, historical photographs, grounds and facilities, and even played Santa at the Log Cabin Museum. He shared his classic car appreciation with numerous friends and family, including his good friend and cohort Al Peterson. Virgil will be remembered for his sense of humor and the creativity and expertise he brought to everything he did.
Virgil passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, June 25, 2014. He is survived by Jan, his devoted wife of forty-three years, his father-in-law Elmer Driver, as well as his children, Mark (Cynthia) Reames, Becky (Bill) Wiggins, Sheila (Barry) Reames Caillier, Melynda (Fred) Rabinovitz, and Alison Reames and his sisters-in-law Carolyn (Will) Winters, Barb (Rick) Grams, and Shirley Sherman. He delighted in his grandchildren, Sarah Twedt, Evan Twedt, Emily (Yamin) Thanwan, Jordan Rabinovitz, Brett Wiggins, Lauren Bromley, and his treasured nieces, Julietta and Lynda, in addition to numerous other nieces and nephews.
An open House celebrating Virgil’s life will be held at the Sydney Gallery on July 13th from 4:30 to 6:30pm. Honorariums and donations in Virgil’s name may be made to the Sydney Museum and Arts Association in Port Orchard (
