Warren Freiwald

October 21, 1920 — August 20, 2003

Warren Otto (Jack) Freiwald was born October 21, 1920 in Forest Park, Illinois and went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, August 20, 2003 while in Harrison Hospital. His father, William Arthur Freiwald and mother, Emma Sponholtz Freiwald preceded him in death as did a grandson, Greg Davis.Warren was graduated from Carl Schurz High School in Chicago, Illinois and attended Washburn School of Business in Chicago. He joined the United States Naval Reserve in 1940 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy February 26, 1941. He retired on May 1, 1971 after thirty years of active duty.He and Betty Jean Dorothy were married November 19, 1966 in Bremerton, Washington. In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by four step-daughters, Beverly Solbey of Tacoma, Washington, Deborah Corso of Bremerton, Beverly Davies of Petaluma, California and Geraldine Bonds of Napa, California; ten grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren and a host of friends.Jack was a life member of the Navy League, Military Officers of America Association, the Disabled American Veterans Association and the American Legion where he had served as a Commander of Post 30 in the past.He served the major portion of World War II in the Pacific as a Commissary Petty Officer and was in numerous campaigns for which he received thirteen decorations and service medals including: Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with 13 battle stars, Purple Heart, Good Conduct, WWII Victory, Japanese Occupation, Philippine Liberation, Korean Service, UN Korean Service and National Defense Medals: Personal Commendation Ribbon with combat "V" signed by Admiral Halsey, Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense, European-African-Middle East Campaign, Vietnan Service Ribbons, Korean Presidential Unit Citation and numerous letters of commendation for outstanding service throughout his career.Jack was particularly proud of his service aboard the USS MORRISON DD560 from March 16, 1944 through May 1945 during which the MORRISON participated in the rescue of more thatn 400 crewmen from the cruiser PRINCETON as it was sinking from a Japanese bomb on October 24, 1944. The MORRISON was later sunk after being hit by three Kamikaze aircraft while on picket patrol off Okinawa May 4, 1945. During this action Freiwald was wounded and transferred to the hospital ship MERCY and was released fit for duty in June 1945. Freiwald remained in the Navy after World War II and served in various supply duties ashore and afloat for the balance of his career. He was promoted to Warrant Officer in 1952, to Lieutenant in 1958 and subsequently retired in the rank of Lieutenant Commander April 30, 1971.Services under the direction of Rill Chapel's Life Tribute Center will be held Wednesday, August 27, at 10:00 AM at Bethany Lutheran Church, 151 Tremont West in Port Orchard, Viewing will be at Rill Chapel's Life Tribute Center on Mitchell Road Tuesday, August 26.
