On July 26, 1932, Warren Douglas Smith Jr., the first of six boys, was born to Warren Douglas and Mabel Nilson Smith in Long Branch, NJ. He is survived by his wife, Audrey; his brother Philip; and his five children, Douglas Loren, Kirsten Ann, Alysan Mae, Leith Daniel, and Amie Joy.
Doug entertained his brothers on Saturday morns with his dramatized stories, graduated from Princeton High School, then earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Rutgers University where he was part of the varsity swim team and served as president of Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF).
Doug and Audrey met at Fairview Island, Canada during a month of IVCF leadership training and married November 23, 1957, while Doug served with the Air Force as an officer in charge of construction of a radar and warning site in the Spanish Pyrenees mountains.
After returning to NJ, Doug completed his M.S. in Civil Engineering, then accepted a college friend's invitation to establish Scripture study groups in all seven universities of Bolivia, S.A. This new path led to the next 25 years of sharing the Gospel of Jesus the Messiah with college students, and while teaching, pastoring, and offering community service along with students and national colleagues in Central and South America.
Doug shared the Word of God with his five children, along with his love for music, swimming, running, reading and ice cream. He also enjoyed sharing the rich treasures of what he was learning towards his M.A. degree in Old and New Testament from Trinity Evangelical Seminary and later his Doctorate studies in Cross Cultural Mission from Fuller Seminary.
His family returned to Pasadena, CA where Doug founded the Institute of Latin American Studies at eh U.S. Center for World Mission. After a decade there, he and Audrey enjoyed 20 years in their Buena Vista, CO home among the collegiate peaks, where they hosted family and friends and shared weekly Bible studies with Spanish speaking inmates at the local Correctional Complex.
Doug enjoyed his last three years in Port Orchard, WA living near three of his children. All five of his children sang and prayed over him around his bedside as he passed from those whom he loved and those who loved him, into the arms of his Savior, Jesus, on April 30, 2023. Doug lived out the title of his book, Blessed to be a Blessing.
