William Oren Munger was born in DeSmet, South Dakota on Feb. 7, 1934, to Fay and Ruth (Jackson) Munger. He died on February 5, 2015, at St. Joseph Hospital in Tacoma after a long illness. Bill graduated from DeSmet High School, Northern State College in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and received a Masters Degree from Western Washington State College.
He traveled the world, making friends in Japan, Guam, and across Europe and the U.S., before settling in Port Orchard in 1980 to raise his son, Rocky.
At various times he was a soldier, truck driver, special education teacher, restauranteur, sheltered workshop director, caterer, and tour operator. Bill taught on a Mennonite colony in South Dakota, at Canadian Academy in Kobe, Japan, on Guam, and in Wapato, Washington. He concluded his special education teaching career at Mann Middle School, in Lakewood where he retired in 2001. In business, he operated Munger UnTours, taking college students on camping trips in Europe; owned The Hungry U pizza restaurant in Seattle; and ran several food truck routes.
He loved Port Orchard and being close to the water. During his illness, he was grateful for the support of friends and many health care professionals.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Dick and Jim. He is survived by his son David (Rocky) and wife Judy, Port Orchard, and sister Karen Hueners, South Dakota.
