Wilma May (Waghorn) Oas was born April 8th, 1923 in Seattle, WA to Roy Vernon and Evelyn Marie-Antoinette (Gehrman) Waghorn. She grew up in West Seattle on a small farm along with her brother, Vernon (seven years her junior). Wilma contracted TB at the age of seven and for two years battled back, winning the war against this disease with the help of a German doctor. The Waghorn's lost their home (nearly paid for) during the Great Depression. After working for the WPA on roads for a period of time, Roy secured a job at the Keyport Torpedo Station. The family moved to Poulsbo and thus starts the great adventure here in Kitsap County. Wilma attended North Kitsap High School until her senior year when she dropped out to help with the war effort, getting a job in the machine shop at the Keyport Torpedo Station. After the war she worked at Skelly's Steak House and some other restaurants. She was introduced to a young man named Jack P. Oas from Tacoma, who was living in Bremerton and working at the Bremerton Navy Yard. They dated for a period of time and were married on May 27th, 1951 in Tacoma, WA and resided in Poulsbo, on Route 4. Wilma gave birth to twins, Jim and Terry, in May of 1953 and to Debbie in May of 1954. She played an active role in Brownies, Cub Scouts, and Girl Scouts. When she wasn't cooking at home, she was working at the Poulsbo Elementary as a cook. She also cooked for the 4-H youth during the Kitsap County Fair, worked in the Grange/Fisher Scone Booth each year and cooked for the youth at the 4-H camp. The things that brought her pleasure were painting, cooking, needlework (like crocheting), craftwork, traveling and gabbing with anyone who had a moment. Did I mention that she liked to cook? She and Jack spent twenty years going to Yuma, AZ for the winter and she did miss that and the friends they made down there. She was known for something down there too (so we have heard); her cooking. She loved her dog Candy, family, friends, strangers and people in general. When anyone asked how she was doing, her standard response for years and years was, "I'm mean, ornery, fat and sassy", but we always found her with a ready smile and a very positive attitude. She knew Jesus as her Savior and we talked about heaven a lot in the past year. She attended church as frequently as she was able and also a Thursday evening Bible Study. We will miss her so very much. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2006, 2:00PM at Vinland Lutheran Church in Poulsbo, WA. Inurnment will be at Breidablick Cemetery in Poulsbo. Memorial donations can be made to Olympic Luther Haven Camp, 9375 Holly Rd, Bremerton, WA 98312 or Vinland Lutheran Church, 2750 NW Finn Hill Rd, Poulsbo, WA 98370.
